Eton College

Eton College was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI and is one of the oldest schools in the country. The College originally had 70 King’s Scholars or ‘Collegers’ who lived in the College and were educated free, and a small number of ‘Oppidans’ who lived in the town of Eton and paid for their education.

Today it is a secondary school for approximately 1,280 boys between the ages of 13 and 18, all of whom are boarders. The School Dress still consists of a black tailcoat and waistcoat, and pin-striped trousers which dates from the 1850s.

The historic buildings of this foundation are an integral part of the national heritage and many famous people, including prime ministers and royal princes, have been educated here.

A 'Museum of Eton Life' is situated in the vaulted undercroft of College Hall and contains over 400 exhibits illustrating the life and history of Eton since its foundation. The Brewhouse Gallery also contains a permanent display of items from the remarkable collection of Egyptian objects assembled by Major William Myers which were bequeathed to Eton in 1899.
