South Bank

Referring to a portion of the southern bank of the Thames River between the south ends of the Hungerford Footbridge and Waterloo Bridge, South Bank, as it is now called, was destined to become a national arts complex when the site was chosen to be developed for the Festival of Britain in 1951.

In addition to the many temporary structures constructed for the event, the Royal Festival Hall was to be the only permanent building on the site. Today, South Bank is the world's largest center for the arts with many other theatres, museums and galleries that have joined the original occupant of the site.
